Plateful App

Plateful is an AI-powered meal planning app designed to simplify cooking and promote healthier eating habits. It provides personalized meal plans, generates smart grocery lists, tracks nutritional goals, and encourages sustainable food practices.

Context

This project was part of our Introduction to Product Design & Development course. We identified a gap in convenient, customizable, and sustainability-focused meal planning tools for students and working professionals. Plateful was developed to fill that gap.

Tools Used

Figma, Miro, Canva, Excel

Data Collection and Analysis

  • External Research:
    • Reviewed 10+ meal-planning patents and literature for solution gaps
    • Found opportunities in smartwatch integration, dietary consultation, and time-based filters
  • Competitive Analysis:
    • Evaluated HelloFresh, Yummly, Mealime, and My FittnessPal
    • Identified lack of real-time prep-time adjustments and integrated wellness tracking
  • Survey Insights:
    • Surveyed 50+ users; 72% wanted meal suggestions tied to physical activity or dietary goals
    • Common user frustrations: recipe overload, no grocery sync, and meal prep taking too long
  • Potential customer Interviews (Pilot):
    • 45% engagement rate on personalized suggestions during pilot tests
    • Feedback highlighted ease of use and interest in grocery tracking + fitness sync features

User Interviews

From the interviews, we found a few key quotes interesting and want to address:

  • “I don't mind cooking, but I never know what to make. I wish there was something that just showed me recipes based on what I already have.” – University Student A

  • “My schedule is packed. I want an app that reminds me what to eat and helps me track calories easily.” – Working Professional B
  • Video recipes and calendar sync are helpful...Working Professional C
  • “I want an app that reminds me what to eat and helps me track calories easily.” – University Student C

Usability Testing Insights

To validate the usability and appeal of our Plateful prototype, we conducted a small-scale user testing round using a mix of surveys, in-app tasks, and interviews with 7 participants (4 students and 3 working professionals).

Quantitative Feedback

We used short Likert-scale surveys (1–5) after users interacted with the prototype.

  • Ease of Navigation: Average rating of 4.3/5
  • Satisfaction with Personalized Recipes: 4.2/5
  • Likelihood of Weekly Use: 4.1/5
  • NPS-style Question ("Would you recommend?"): Average rating: 7.8/10

These numbers reflected a generally positive experience, especially around ease of use and personalization. Minor drop-off was observed on the recipe filtering screen, suggesting some visual complexity or confusion in that flow.

Qualitative Feedback

We asked open-ended questions during and after the prototype walk-through. A few standout comments:

  • “I like that it asks about my goals.”
  • “I'd definitely use the grocery list feature. I usually forget what I need.”
  • “I got confused about filtering recipes. Maybe show fewer options first?”
  • “Would be cool if it connected with my fitness tracker, but I know this is still a prototype.”

Key Learnings

  • Users appreciated the personalization and clarity of the layout
  • The grocery list and "cook with what you have" features stood out as most useful
  • The filtering flow needs to be simplified for better first-time usability
  • There is clear interest in future integrations (e.g., fitness apps), but they weren't expected at the prototype stage
